Wood work is like software development. Both have design and building, but both are totally different. For wooden work, you should not cut all woods from the beginning as designed. Once you cut wood, it will change its shape. Also, you realize your measurement mistake. For example, when I built the gate, I should have cut wood only for one door, but I did cut the wood for both. Now, I have about 1/3 wood leftover, and even worse, all woods are already cut. I need to make up a project. Luckily, I have one!

 

木工の仕事とソフトウェアの仕事は似ている。どちらも、デザインがあり作る作業がある。でも、ぜんぜん違う。木工では、最初にデザインどうり、全部の木を切ってはいけない。いったん切ると、木の形が変わる。それに、はかり間違いしているかもしれない。例えば、私の門の話で、片方のドアーだけの分の木を切るべきだった。でも、全部切ってしまって、3分の1ほど木が余ってしまった。悪いことにそれらの木は全部切られている。何かプロジェクトを考えないと。運良く、ひとつあるのです！

Big Failure with Wooden Gate 門の大失敗

Now, I’m building a wooden gate for my private drive. It has 13 feet distance. I designed it, and it has two doors. I bought 2X4 and others parts at Home Depot and built one door. I realized it was too heavy to be supported by a steal hinge. One door has 6.5 feet width and height has about 45 inches. The weight is about 60 pounds (27kg). If it is a regular door, the hinge would support it, but because of the long width, it is totally different story. If you don’t understand it, find a wood stick or something and hold it in horizontally or vertically. You will realize how heaviness is different. I ended up split 2X4 and make the door shape rectangle to triangle.

 

今、自分の個人の道の木でできた門を作っている。幅がだいたい4メートル。自分でデザインして、それは2つのドアーからできている。ツーバイフォーの木やその他のパーツをホームデュポで買ってくる。そして、片側のドアーを作る。作ってから、これは重過ぎるときずく。幅が約2メーター高さが、90センチ。重さが、２７Kg.これが、普通のドアーだったら、ちょうつがいも大丈夫だったんだけど、この幅で、全く話にならない。分からなければ、木のスティックを横か縦かで持ってみると違いが分かる。結局、ツーバイフォーを半分に割って、ドアーの形を4角から三角に変えた。
